French compass young star Flavien Coton once again demonstrated his skills at the WTT Star Youth Contender, which was held in Podgorica, Montenegro, from 10 to 14 April, reaching the semi-finals in the U19 singles and doubles (together with his compatriot Nathan Lam). In the U19 mixed event he finished in the top 8 with Charlotte Lutz, also from France.

A WTT Youth Star Contender differs from the normal Contenders in several aspects: The number of players is limited, which means that there is no free entry to the tournament. And the prize money is much higher – USD 800 for a normal WTT Youth Contender compared to USD 15,000 for the Star Contenders.

Flavien Coton is 16 years old and is already achieving strong results among players three years older in the U19 category. The competition in Podgorica was fierce, as China, Japan and Korea were also represented. In the singles, the young Frenchman impressively defeated China’s Li Hechen, but lost to Poland’s Alan Kulczycki in straight games. Nevertheless, Coton made it through to the knockout round as group winner.

In the knockout phase, Flavien first defeated Gil Minseok from South Korea 11:4 in the deciding set. In the quarter-finals, Coton defeated top seed Kim Gaon, also from South Korea, 3:1, but China’s Sun Yang was too strong in the semi-finals and won in straight games. Sun Yang, who plays in the same age group as Flavien and is a chopper, then defeated Chang Yu-An from Chinese Taipei in the final.

Semi-finals in doubles as well

Flavien competed in the doubles together with Nathan Lam. After victories against Zalewski/Kulczycki (Poland) and Arpas/Lei (Slavkia/Hungary), the Frenchmen suffered a 2:3, 6:11 defeat in the deciding set against the final winners Chang Yu-An/Hung Jing-Kai (Chinese Taipei) in the semi-finals after four even sets.

Flavien competed in the mixed doubles together with Charlotte Lutz. Together they made it through to the quarter-finals, where they lost 3:1 to Kwon Hyuk/Yoo Yerin from the South Korea.

He reached the knockout round in the U15 singles. In the round of the last 16, he fought a tough battle with Tsubasa Okamoto from Japan, but lost in the fifth and deciding game 14:16 (!). In the U15 doubles, Danilo and his compatriot Francesco Trevisan reached the quarter-finals, where the Italians lost 3:0 to Poland’s Samuel Michna and Kacper Perkowski.
