Jeffrey Wei finished second in his group in the older U15 event and reached the knockout stage where he lost 3:1 to seeded Matt Closset of Belgium in the round of last 32. In the U13 event, Jeffrey entered the tournament seeded seventh and won all three of his group matches to qualify for the knockout stage as a 3-4 seed.

In the first round, Jeffrey defeated Dimitar Dimitrov of England in straight games. He continued his impressive run with a thrilling semi-final against Stefan Bonchev of Bulgaria. Jeffrey won in the decider: 11:7, 11:13, 11:9, 10:12, 11:8.

Strong wins

“This was a good win for Jeffrey,” said compass expert coach Oliver Alke, who has been training Jeffrey intensively for several years. “Jeffrey lost to Bonchev (who is ranked sixth in Europe in the U13 category) by two points in the decider at the last ETTU Youth tournament, so this win felt really good for him”.

In the final, Jeffrey was up against Jonathan Kraft, a player at the same level to whom Jeffrey also lost in their last meeting. But in the final in Sarajevo, Jeffrey was the strongest. He won 11-7, 11-7, 5-11, 11-8.

“Mentally, the match in Sarajevo was a very strong performance from Jeffrey,” Oliver Alke continued. “He showed good self-confidence in the decisive moments and deserves this success as he always trains with great enthusiasm and spirit”.

Twice semi-finalist in Bosnia-Herzegovina

At the beginning of April, Jeffrey also took part in the third of the season’s six Joola Europe Youth Series tournaments, which took place in Bosnia-Herzegovina from 16.-20. April. In the U13 singles, Jeffrey won his group and advanced to the last 16 where he met Pietro Campagna from Italy, who won the U13 event at the WTT Youth Contender in Poland in March and is ranked 10th in Europe in the U13 category. Jeffrey was trailing 1:2 but managed to turn the match around to win 11:7 in the decider.

In the semi-finals, Jeffrey played another full game match, this time against Stefan Bonchev from Bulgaria, who is ranked number 6 in Europe. Jeffrey came close to winning the match but lost 11:13 in the fifth and deciding game. Bonchev went on to win the tournament.

In the doubles, Jeffrey and his compatriot Jonathan Kraft beat a team from Montenegro in the quarter-finals. They then lost in straight games to the finalists, Stefan Bonchev and Simon Zsigmond of Hungary.
