Good results for compass in Tunis and Croatia

Germany’s Josephina Neumann from compass made it into the top four in the U17 competition at the WTT Youth Contender Tunis 2024, which took place from 23 to 26 February. In the semi-final, the 14-year-old lost to Yoo Yerin from South Korea, who is one year older.

“Josi” started the knockout phase of the U17 singles tournament by defeating Syndrela Das from India 21-19 (!) in the fifth and deciding game. The victories against Jade Morice from Algeria and Mak Ming Shum from Hong Kong were easier, but unfortunately Neumann lost 6:11, 9:11, 11:9 and 6:11 against Yoo Yerin in the semi-finals.

Malov twice in the top 8

compass talent Alexander Malov from Spain also took part in Tunis. “Sasha”, 11 years old and born in 2012, made it to the quarter-finals of the U15 event after a strong performance. On the way there, he defeated Yousuf Hanifa from Saudi Arabia, who reached the final in the U13 competition. In the U15 quarter-finals, Malov lost 3:1 to Khurshid Akhmedov from Uzbekistan, with Ma Yeongmin from South Korea ultimately winning the tournament.

In the U13 event, Alexander Malov was defeated in the quarter-finals by another player from Uzbekistan – Alikhan Kamalov, who won 3:1.

Lizett and Jeffrey finalists in Croatia

The 2024 Europe Youth Series season recently kicked off in Croatia.  A fairly strong field of participants competed in Croatia, which hosted the first of six youth tournaments that will be part of the 2024 ETTU Youth Series.

Among the compass players taking part, the best placings were Lizett Fazekas’ silver in the girls’ U13 singles. And the German Jeffrey Wei, who finished second in the boys U13 doubles together with his compatriot Tien Nghia Phong.

Lizett had a tough quarter-final in the U13 singles event, which she won against Sophia Pichler from Austria 13:11, 12:10, 11:13, 11:5. The semi-final against Maya Roberta Madar from Romania was smoother, but the final against Lucja Kobosz from Poland was again very even. The score was 1:1 after two sets before Lizett narrowly lost two sets 9:11 and 9:11.

Dramatic semi-final

Jeffrey Wei and Tien Nghia Phong defeated a Serbian team in the quarter-finals and then Hubert Kwiecinski/Adam Stackowiak from Poland in a dramatic five-set match in the semi-finals – 11:8, 11:7, 9:11, 10:12 and finally 11:6 in favour of the German team in the deciding set. In the final, the Romanians Alexadru Pop and David Toro were too strong and won confidently without losing a set.

Ivo twice in the quarter-finals

Ivo Quett and Luke Jalass also had some successes. In the U15 boys’ doubles, the pair defeated the Danish combination of Severinsen/Hasselbalch 3:1 in the last 16 and then lost 2:3 (4:11 in the fifth game) to Robert Alexandru Istrate/Mihail Nagy from Romania. Ivo also made it into the top 8 in the singles, beating Alexandru Pop 3:2 in the round of 16 and then losing 3:1 to Aleks Pakula from Poland.
