Steven Moreno winner in Portugal

Compass player Steven Moreno from Puerto Rico had a successful week when the WTT Youth Contender was played in Vila Real, Portugal, from 10 to 16 February. Steven won the U15 singles after defeating Sandro Cavaille from France in the final.

Steven Moreno, born in 2010, began the knockout phase of the U15 tournament with victories over the two Spaniards Cristian Sanchez and Alvaro Gimeno. Steven defeated Carlos Goncalves from the host country in the quarter-finals and Axel Bossis from France three to one in the semi-finals. After losing two of the first three games in the final and winning the second 12:10, Steven Moreno showed strong nerves in the end and won the last two games 11:7 and 11:9.
In the U17 singles, Steven defeated Dario Salcedo from Spain in the last 16, but Flavio Mourier from France was too strong in the quarter-finals and won in straight games.
Steven Moreno and Beatriz Fiore from Brazil also made it through to the last eight in the U19 mixed doubles. The South American team lost 1:3 to the final winners Susana Esteves Costa/Tiago Abiodun, Portugal.

Otalvaro among the top 8

The second South American member of compass, Emanuel Otalvaro, also played a good tournament. Emanuel defeated Dinis Ye from Portugal in the last 16 and then lost 3:1 to Axel Bossis from France.

…and Mayorov second

In the younger age groups, compass player Ladimir Mayorov from Spain made it to the final in the U13 category, even though he was born in 2013 and is two years younger than many of his opponents. Ladimir defeated Luciano Medrano from Austria in the quarter-finals (3:1) and his compatriot Marcos Gomez in the semi-finals (3:0). In the final, Frenchman Nolan Johnston was slightly better, Ladimir lost – 4:11, 11:6, 3:11, 11:7 and 4:11. Nolan Johnston had also beaten compass player Alexander Malov at an earlier stage in straight games.

In the singles competition, Görkem made it through to the round of 16 in the U17 age group. In the U15 age group, he beat Noah Genart from Belgium and Parham Golestani from Iran before losing 3:2 to his compatriot Berk Oztorak in the semi-finals. Görkem led 2:1, but lost the last two sets 5:11 and 8:11.

compass player Alexander Malov also took part in Antalya. He did not make it past the group stage in the U15 event and lost to Faraz Shakiba in the first round of the knockout phase in the U13 event without winning a set.
